Abandoned and Wrecked Vessels

In 2018, the Nova Scotia Lands Environmental Analysis & Remediation team was asked to join a provincial working group on abandoned and wrecked vessels being monitored by various departments in Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia Lands were sought out based on their project management experience gained from the removal of the M.V. Miner from the shoreline of Scatarie Island. About 30 vessels were identified in varying states and the team had to provide the current condition, the location, the name and any logistical information to perform assessments on these vessels under the Transport Canada Abandoned Boat Program.

Assessments of the vessels are now complete and NS Lands was granted permission from Transport Canada to remove 20 vessels, as the other 10 were either removed by their owners or did not qualify for the Abandoned Boat Program. NS Lands has also completed the Marine Surveys on all 20 vessels.

Removal of these vessels will be scheduled as funding becomes available during the 2020-2022 construction seasons. For more information, contact James Webster at 902-890-8253.
